Human Rehabilitation Framework - Lower Quarter Applications Course (HRF-LQ)

Course Description

This course is a lab-intensive 1-day class that provides regional case-based applications of the principles of Human Rehabilitation Framework (HRF) for the lower extremity. Integration of contemporary neuroscience, anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and social/environmental layers forms the cornerstone of the course. Open-ended discussions regarding the application of Biopsychosocial Process-Based HRF in the context of pain, movement, exercise, manual therapy, and the integration of the participants existing skill set will be emphasized. This course is predominantly hands-on and includes navigating movement, exercise, and manual therapy. Participants are expected to have reviewed their Functional Understanding of Human Rehabilitation manual prior to attendance. Regions of the lower extremity to be covered includes:

  • Foot/Ankle
  • Knee
  • Hip
  • Lumbopelvic and
  • Lower thoracic

Course Background

The study of movement and pain has undergone significant changes in the last four decades as increased effort to move healthcare from a biomedical to biopsychosocial approach for care. The Human Rehabilitation Framework (HRF) is the world’s first biopsychosocial process-based approach to rehabilitation, accessible by all disciplines to deliver care in a transdisciplinary manner. It addresses the criticisms of the Biopsychosocial (BPS) Model and is an evolutionary step forward for Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), providing a new perspective that synthesizes scientific evidence, clinical practice, and personalized care. The HRF is based on the scientific philosophy of Functional Contextualism and replaces differential diagnosis, Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs), Clinical Prediction Rules (CPRs), and Clinical Pathways with a process-based approach for evaluation and intervention. It supports advances in personalized precision medicine and the value-based care model and is designed to be ready for the future of biomedicine and biopsychosocial research.

Course Target Audience: Physical Therapists, Athletic Trainers, Occupational Therapists, Chiropractors, Physical and Occupational Therapist Assistants, Massage Therapists, Counselors/Social Workers, Nurses/Nurse Practitioners, Osteopaths, Physicians, Rehabilitation Professional Students

Course Objectives

  2. Introduce critical thinking skills regarding movement, exercise, and manual therapy from the perspective of the HRF and contemporary science of movement, manual therapy, and pain.

  3. Increase participant’s ability to develop “Confident Ambiguity” in the face of the complexity of pain in their patient’s lives pain with emphasis on the lower quarter.
