COMMUNITY CLINIC

Advanced Physical therapy & rehabilitation

VisionWorks

IOCH’s Community Clinic offers specialized vision rehabilitation designed for individuals experiencing visual impairments following a traumatic brain injury. VisionWorks is built to improve how you see, process, and interact with your environment so you can return to the activities that matter most.

This program typically involves consistent, structured sessions focused on improving visual function, reducing symptom triggers, and increasing your ability to engage in daily life.

Our team of occupational therapists with advanced training in vision rehabilitation will work closely with you to develop a personalized plan based on your specific symptoms, goals, and daily demands.

What is Vision Rehabilitation?

Vision rehabilitation is a structured, evidence-informed approach to improving how the brain and eyes work together.

After a traumatic brain injury, many individuals experience challenges with:

  • Eye movements (tracking, focusing, coordination)
  • Visual processing and integration
  • Sensitivity to light or visually complex environments
  • Difficulty with reading, screens, or navigation

VisionWorks targets these areas directly using a combination of:

  • Oculomotor training (pursuits, saccades, fixation, vergence)
  • Visual processing and integration exercises
  • Functional task-based interventions
  • Individually prescribed home programs

Our approach is grounded in the Human Rehabilitation Framework (HRF), allowing us to adjust intensity, progression, and focus based on how you respond to treatment.

Who Can Benefit from VisionWorks?

VisionWorks is designed for individuals experiencing visual challenges that impact daily function, especially following a concussion or traumatic brain injury.

This program may be appropriate if you:

  • Experience headaches, dizziness, or fatigue with visual tasks
  • Struggle with reading, screens, or focusing
  • Feel overwhelmed in busy or visually demanding environments
  • Have difficulty with balance, coordination, or navigation
  • Notice reduced tolerance for work, school, or daily activities
  • Have ongoing symptoms months after injury

Many individuals in this program have tried other approaches but continue to experience persistent limitations.

What Does VisionWorks Focus On?

VisionWorks is designed to improve how your visual system supports your daily life.

Key areas include:

Improving visual function
Reducing symptom triggers and improving visual ease during everyday tasks.

Strengthening processing and integration
Helping your brain better organize and interpret visual information.

Enhancing efficiency and accuracy
Improving speed, coordination, and performance across activities like reading, work, and mobility.

Addressing specific impairments
Targeting limitations in eye movements, focusing, and visual–vestibular integration.

Building strategies for daily life
Helping you understand your symptoms and apply practical strategies across environments.

How Is VisionWorks Structured?

VisionWorks is typically delivered across two focused sessions per week, each serving a distinct role in your progress.

Session 1: Vision Rehabilitation
Focused on improving how your eyes and brain work together through targeted interventions such as:

  • Eye movement training (tracking, focusing, coordination)
  • Visual processing and integration
  • Gradual exposure to visual demands

Session 2: Adaptive Strategies and Application
Focused on helping you apply changes to your daily life by:

  • Identifying and modifying symptom triggers
  • Adjusting environments (work, home, screens, lighting)
  • Building pacing and energy management strategies
  • Practicing real-world tasks that matter to you

This structure allows you to not only improve visual function, but also learn how to navigate your environment more effectively as those changes occur.

Personalized to Your Life

VisionWorks is built around your environment, your goals, and your daily demands.

Your care plan will consider:

  • Work or school requirements
  • Screen use and visual load
  • Home and community environments
  • Physical, cognitive, and sensory demands

This allows us to move beyond isolated exercises and focus on meaningful improvements in real-world function.

Access. Understanding. Support.

VisionWorks addresses a critical gap in access to advanced vision rehabilitation.

We provide:

  • Evidence-informed care
  • Clear education on your symptoms and progress
  • Structured, goal-directed treatment
  • Support for applying changes in daily life

Our goal is to help you better understand your experience, reduce limitations, and improve your ability to participate in the activities that matter to you.
